We've all ran into a word or two on a roleplaying site that we have no idea what it means. We're here to help.
WORDS: A-D
WORDS: A-D
affiliate = when sites partner with other sites. also known as affy. to show affiliation, sites make little buttons (size is 88x31) and they have a thread in the advertising section for sites to reply to asking for affiliation. The buttons are normally displayed on the sidebar or in the forum description of the advertising forum.
avatar = also commonly called an icon. this is the small graphic that goes under your username. they are commonly 100 x 100 in dimensions but sometimes bigger.
bashing = this is when you show a large amount of hate for a certain subject.
canons = premade characters for sites, usually done by the administrative staff members.
c-box = chatbox, the fun little box usually found in the sidebar for you to talk to people.
closed thread = also known as a tagged thread. when a thread is for a particular person therefore only that person can post to it. Usually it's indicated in the forum description.
WORDS: E-H
face claim = also known as a play-by. it is the celebrity used to give a 'face' or appearance to the character.
god-modding = controlling another characters action in your post, it is strictly forbidden on the majority of sites because you play your character(s) not anyone elses.
hotlinking = also known as direct linking. when you take an image, right click, and use that url without saving it or rehosting ( uploading to your own server ). this is frowned upon, as it uses up the makers bandwidth and makes us all sad.
WORDS: I-L
icon = see avatar
ic box = sometimes called the icebox, this is the chat box where you may post with your characters.
karma = on proboards, if karma is allowed you may have noticed a number in your mini profile. people can smite (-) or exalt (+) your karma depending on how much they like you. this can be bad though as it shows bashing.
WORDS:M-Q
mary sues = characters that are too good to be true. i.e: a blond that's a model, happy, and has the perfect boyfriend with nothing going wrong.
one-liner = posting one line of words displaying your characters actions to a thread. It is usually considered as a bad post these days.
ooc = basically a shortened version of 'out of character'
open thread = the post is open for anyone to post. this is generally indicated in the forum description.
parrot posts: sounds like it would be a follow-up post that just echoes everything from the previous post
play-by = longer version of PB; a celebrity used to give an appearance to a character. SEE ALSO: face claim.
pm = shortened term for personal message. these are messages, kind of like e-mails, sent to users on any given site you are on.
post = the response you make to a thread when roleplaying on a site.
proboards = a free forum hosting site.
production team = a name for a group of people that often makes sites together. i.e: a c to your b production team.
signature = commonly referred to as a "sig"; a place to put graphics that show up at the bottom of any post you make on a given board.
WORDS R-U
tagged thread = see closed thread
thread = the actual role playing, generally between two characters but there are times when there are more.
